Living in the past? Yes please…

without comments

Really enjoyed Wayne Hemingway at Yell’s Clicking with Customers event last week. Listening to him talking about hard graft, making your own luck, keeping to your principles and rolling around naked in loads of cash was a tad more interesting than looking at this screen! LOVED the look of his Vintage Festival at Goodwood last year, at London’s Southbank this. A hint that it may possibly come to Bristol in the future? Hope so. Check out the lovely graphics.

40m hoarding for Unite Student Housing Manchester

Hoarding installation for Unite Manchester

Student Housing provider Unite are expanding their property portfolio across the UK and while work continues to complete the new building in Manchester by September, Create installed a 40 metre hoarding around the site. The hoarding was completed in just 4 days from being given the go ahead by the client and the result is a great showcase for the development, showing images of the interiors of the accommodation together with Unite branding.

Clas Ohlson LED illuminated retail sign Merry Hill

A really classy sign - Clas Ohlson Merry Hill

Maybe not quite as prolific as Ikea yet but Swedish homeware and electrical retailer Clas Ohlson are expanding fast across the UK. The distinctive blue fascias are a beacon in shopping centres across the UK signalling quality products designed to make life a little easier. Founded in Sweden in 1918, Clas Ohlson came to the UK in 2008 and now has 11 stores nationwide with more planned. See some more of our retail signage here.

Inspiring Sign Photography: Old But Not Forgotten

with one comment

What can possibly be inspiring about an old, unkempt sign barely clinging to the wall on which it hangs by a few screws, now dark brown with rust?

Surprisingly, the basic components of a well made commercial sign haven’t changed for many years. Trends have come and gone but some of these signs are no less effective than any modern sign – we’ve just moved on in design trends and technology.

Perhaps then, we can learn from the simplicity of sign design from the past – brand name, logo and slogan standing out proudly, with a few bold colours to catch the eye of a passer by.

So, here are some examples of old signs which encapsulate simplistic design, while powerfully advertising a brand.

Still going, but old sign

In the early 20th century, motorsport was beginning to take off around the world. Old commercial signs for motor oil can still be found in almost any country.

Soft carbonated drinks have been around for a long time and heavily advertised during the 20th century. Coca Cola started in 1888, Pepsi in 1903 and 7 Up in 1929 (originally publicised with the catchy name, Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda).

There’s a lot going on at the University of the West of England at the moment. With fantastic expansion and development projects underway, UWE is set to become one of the largest modern university campuses in the UK. We’ve been busy installing campus-wide external wayfinding at Frenchay and look forward to seeing the transformation of the new campus in the next few years.
